What Is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a common vision disorder that begins to present signs in the early to mid 40s for most adults. The condition comes as a result of the lens of your eye stiffening and becoming less flexible with age—when you are young, the lens of your eye is incredibly flexible, and can change shape as needed to help you focus and “zoom in.”
Common complications you may experience in relation to your presbyopia include:
- Increased blurriness in your vision, especially with objects in close proximity
- Difficulty reading, or requiring additional light in order to read
- The need to hold objects at a distance in order to focus on them
- Headaches when reading or using a computer
Presbyopia is progressive, and will continue to worsen as you get older. This means addressing the condition as soon as possible is ideal in order to find treatments that are right for you.
Treatments for Presbyopia
Though presbyopia is inevitable for nearly everyone, thankfully it is quite treatable. The condition cannot be reversed or cured, so to speak, but can be corrected very effectively with a variety of means, each of which comes with its own advantages.
At Visionary Eye Doctors we offer presbyopia treatments such as monovision and multifocal contact lenses, and also offer more permanent options such as laser surgery for presbyopia.
Monovision LASIK is an excellent option for younger patients who have not yet begun to develop cataracts. With LASIK, one eye can be corrected for far vision, and one for near vision, providing you with the means to focus correctly without dealing with the blurriness commonly attributed to presbyopia.
Older patients, or those who have begun to develop cataracts, may choose to undergo another option—surgical eye implants are an effective form of eye surgery for presbyopia. The procedure is simple, and highly effective at restoring vision by manipulating how the eye processes light.
