Visionary Eye Doctors Pre-Med Gap Year Clinical Program: Ophthalmic Scribe

Program Description:

Welcome to Visionary Eye Doctors, a group of highly skilled ophthalmologists & optometrists providing top-quality eye care in the DC metropolitan area. We provide a highly educational & hands-on environment ideal for those seeking advanced education in the medical field. We are currently seeking motivated individuals who are interested in pursuing higher education in the medical field & gaining valuable experience working with physicians. Our offices are conveniently located in Rockville, Shady Grove, Damascus, North Bethesda, Gaithersburg, & Washington, DC.

Our scribe program is designed to help you become a certified ophthalmic scribe & gain extensive experience in patient & surgical care. As a medical scribe, you will learn medical terminology & obtain the clinical & patient care experience required to excel in this field. In association with the American Academy of Ophthalmology & JCHAPO, you can obtain the AAO Medical Assisting Certification & Ophthalmic Scribe Certification after completing our training.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Medical Scribe is present during clinical services and accompanies the Provider during patient examinations and procedures in the office.
  • Accurately documents information and conversations into the electronic health record (EHR) in real-time on behalf of the Provider.
  • Helps increase Provider productivity and workflow by performing a variety of non-clinical tasks, including assisting the Provider in navigating the EHR, researching information requested by the Provider, locating information for review (previous notes, reports, tests/lab results)
  • Ensures documentation in the EHR includes” the Scribe’s name and date of the exam. 
  • Generate patient plans.

When I started at Visionary Eye Doctors, I was a first year biology major at the University of Maryland with very little experience in the healthcare field. I was hired and trained as a medical scribe by the wonderful clinical staff, which allowed me to work alongside incredible optometrists and ophthalmologists. When I first joined Visionary, I was a recent college graduate applying to medical school. During my time working as medical scribe, I was able to get meaningful experience that helped me during medical school.  I gained medical knowledge in the ophthalmology field and developed my clinical skills. Today as a pediatric resident doctor, I look back fondly at my time at VO because it helped shape me in to the doctor I am today.  I learned the basics of case presentations to attendings, charting, medical terminology, and how to work efficiently which definitely gave me an upper hand while applying to medical school. Not only did I learn about Ophthalmology and patient care, but I gained a lot of skills and knowledge that helped me apply to medical school. Working at Visionary Eye Doctors as an ophthalmic assistant was one of the best decisions I have made as an aspiring physician because not only did I learn about key aspects of a healthcare system, but I formed relationships with some of the warmest people I have ever met. My role at VED was never limited to one thing, as managers always search for ways to escalate skills and responsibilities. I was able to write extensively about my experiences on secondary applications and feel that the opportunities I had as a scribe and as an IPL-technician helped set me apart from others. As a current MD candidate at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, I have been able to build upon skills I learned at VED like communicating effectively with patients, taking a proper history prior to examination, and what it’s like to deal with insurance companies.
